Having your spine aligned is a very important part of having your body in agreement in the martial arts. The muscles in your body are all designed to work together and be connected in how they work together. If I’m being grabbed and I go to pull against that grab with my body out of alignment, it doesn’t work. If I’m standing up and my spine is stacked, then I can move their balance with leverage from mine. Pulling with muscles out of alignment, the body doesn’t get leverage the same way, it’s weaker.
The same thing applies as you yield against an attack. With proper spine alignment it’s easier to turn and rotate. That makes it easier to throw a strike right away. Losing that alignment shortens the length of your strikes it also stiffens your rotation so it takes more effort and doesn’t work as comfortably. You can actuate your spine and take different shapes within your Shaolin Animal Movements and get power from the body as it changes shape. For example opening and closing your upper body, but by practicing good spine alignment you can shift through those shapes and open and close more naturally and with more power.
